DiadSea is endorsed as a UN Ocean Decade Action
The DiadSea project, a transnational initiative focused on the conservation and management of diadromous migratory fish, has been officially endorsed as an Ocean Decade Action under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030).
This endorsement marks a major milestone for DiadSea, reinforcing its international relevance and opening new opportunities for collaboration across ocean basins. Representing regions from Portugal, France, Spain, and Ireland, the project addresses the urgent need for shared, cross-border solutions to protect species that migrate between freshwater and marine environments—species increasingly threatened by climate change. The endorsement allows DiadSea to engage with scientists, fishers, policymakers, and community practitioners to co-develop frameworks for assessing vulnerabilities and defining actionable adaptation strategies for resilient fisheries.
Specifically, DiadSea has been endorsed under the host programme ‘Fisheries Strategies for Changing Oceans and Resilient Ecosystems by 2030 (FishSCORE 2030)’. Led by the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, FishSCORE 2030 aims to build a global network of experts and stakeholders to advance climate resilience, sustainability, and equity in marine fisheries. The programme supports the development and application of tools to assess climate impacts and enhance resilience in fishery systems worldwide.
What is more, DiadSea contributes to two Ocean Decade challenges:
- – Challenge 3: Sustainable Blue Food, which promotes sustainable and equitable access to ocean-based food sources.
- – Challenge 4: Sustainable Ocean Economy, which supports the development of a resilient and inclusive ocean economy.
